11/19/2023 0 Comments Red desert adventure reviews![]() I have done this hike before back in 2006, and here’s what I learned. We changed courses at the this point, a bit defeated. By the time we got into the park the rangers advised against heading to the trail. There was a crazy line for the shuttle when we left, and the storm cloud's were brewing. Flash floods are more common in the afternoon, so the best thing to do is leave early morning for this hike, and talk to a ranger at the visitors center before you head out. You can bring these with you or rent them at the visitor’s center.įlash floods can happen in the canyon, and if you have nowhere to retreat then it can be deadly. You'll need a walking stick for balance and water shoes if you want to be comfortable. Since it's out and back you can make it as short or as long as you feel comfortable with. It’s a hike through a slot canyon, where you wade through the canyon water up to 10 miles out and back. ![]() The Narrows is one of Zion's most famous adventures. From December to March the park’s free shuttles aren’t running. Avoid June - August it' gets too hot to hike. The best weather for Zion are in the month’s of April, May, Oct and Nov. Montclair Inn & Suites at Zion National Park is a well priced hotel with a pool and mountain views really close to the park. You can also rent a suite with a small kitchen if you prefer to cook rather than dine out. I usually choose something like this for a National Park because you spend most of your time away from the hotel exploring.Ĭable Mountain Lodge has a few more perks like a seasonal heated pool and a hot tub with canyon views. La Quinta by Wyndham at Zion Park/Springdale is simple, clean, no frills. There aren’t too many hotels to choose from so book far in advance. The south entrance of Zion in Springdale is by far the most popular entrance with a bustling city that has a lot of parking and restaurants. Tip: Don’t visit on holiday weekends, it’s too busy! Where to Stay The free shuttles only run April - November. We did this trip on Labor Day weekend, so while the shuttle systems were still running it was a little painful waiting around because the lines were so long. This makes it easy to access all parts of the park by hopping on and off this bus. Everyone agreed this was the favorite memory of our Utah trip, and we give Eric and his outfit the highest recommendation.Zion has a great shuttle system that starts at several large parking lots outside the park. Despite the somewhat understated website for Red Desert, we followed the advice of others on TripAdvisor and took a chance on using a smaller outfit (we like to support the smaller guys) and were amply rewarded with our choice. Eric is a very pleasant and interesting guy with a diverse background in professional climbing and photography, which made for great conversation on the drives and hikes as well as a dependable source of many great pictures during the trip. During our time Eric was top notch the whole way, making our family very comfortable with his encouraging, competent manner and helping one daughter overcome her fears on the first rappel. Upon exiting the canyon we expected a slog up a fire road back to the van but were pleasantly surprised by a thrilling scramble and climb up a rock slope Eric helped us on that gave some unique views back into the canyon and surrounding hills. The perspective from the canyon interior is really unique and incredibly memorable - if you enjoy photography it's a dream come true. ![]() Yankee Doodle was super-scenic and a very good but doable challenge for us with a mix of rappels (30', 70'), obstacles to downclimb with rope assists, and beautiful hiking along a very narrow slot canyon. Note this is in the Pine Valley Mountains, which is about a 45min drive from Springdale, but well worth the effort to get there (note park policy prevents the commercial guides from actually guiding in Zion National Park, but instead in surrounding areas outside the park). Eric took us to Yankee Doodle Canyon, which is the tougher of the two canyons he typically guides in. Our guide was Eric Draper, who is the owner. We included a half-day canyoneering trip with Red Desert Adventures during our recent family vacation to Utah.

A feeder is often placed nearby, allowing hunters to chase deer and other critters from virtually any location.
